Hey guys – meet Star. Less than a week ago I came home from a late night at work to find that my previously happy and healthy companion was in critical condition, seemingly out of nowhere. She could not walk, her throat was swollen so she could barely breathe and could only drink water when I gave it to her through a syringe, and she seemed to be in extreme pain. A 1am mad dash to the emergency animal clinic accomplished absolutely nothing to diagnose what was ailing her, but thankfully a much more competent veterinarian was able to diagnose the problem the very next morning – unfortunately, though, it wound up being not one problem, but a combination of several smaller ailments (severe dehydration, urinary tract infection, inflammation of internal organs, possible fluid in her lungs, swollen throat, etc.) and one very big problem (cancer in her kidney).
When the vet quoted me the bill for her immediately needed treatments, alone (bloodwork, x-rays, urine culture, initial antibiotics, etc.), I was devastated when it wound up being somewhere in the range of $500. I have only a part-time job, and unfortunately keep no extra stash of money saved aside for emergency situations like these. However, thanks to a post I made here on Tumblr advertising discounted commissions for Star’s medical bills that got boosted upwards of 1,000 times by the wonderful people of Tumblr, between people pledging commissions and simply donating to her cause, I was able to raise the $500 needed for her immediate treatments within the very first day of that post going up. Talk about one’s faith in humanity being restored.
Star’s first night being left in veterinary care was the absolute hardest. I came home from work late Friday night to find two messages from the vet on my answering machine telling me that Star was unlikely to live through the night and would most likely have to be euthanized the following morning for her own good. I was absolutely heartbroken, but when I went in the following morning to see my princess one last time before having to put her down, I found that not only was she not dead, but she had made a miraculous improvement during the night! The swelling in her throat had gone down so she could meow again (a fact she took full advantage of), and while she still could not eat or drink on her own, she had at least started showing some interest in water again!
I took her home that evening with instructions to bring her back first thing the next morning for another round of antibiotics, nausea medication, hydration therapy, and other needed treatments, and I have been following this pattern ever since. Star has been slowly improving and growing stronger (a full blow-by-blow account of her progress can be found here, for anyone curious) but unfortunately, this treatment is costing somewhere in the range of $50/day, which does not even include the second blood test she was given to see if her readings have improved since she was first brought in, or the much more intensive treatments or even surgery she will potentially undergo once they have taken care of her secondary problems (depending on what the vet’s call on that is) to take care of the biggest problem, her cancer.
For this reason, I am continuing to offer discounted commissions to try to raise money for Star’s medical bills. Samples of my artwork can be found here and here, and discounted commission prices are:

Commissions are finished on a more or less first come first serve basis, and as there are still lovely people whose artwork I have not yet finished from the first round of commissions, any commissions requested this time around will likely not be completed for a little bit - but please do not worry about this being any sort of scam, as except for in very rare cases, I do not accept payment until the artwork has been finished so as to prevent commissioner-artist problems from arising. As far as the artwork, itself goes, I am more than willing to draw multiple characters, and please do not be shy to ask any questions you might have about the subject matter or the pricing! Chances are, I would be willing to draw just about anything for these kitty-medicine commissions.
I would like nothing more than for my kitty to be happy and healthy again like she used to be, and any and all help and well-wishes are appreciated more than words can say. Even if you do not want any artwork, please reblog this to get the signal out! It would mean more than anything else in the world to me to see Star back to her ornery, sassy old self. :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this through – it really means so much to me, and to Star. <3
